What actually changed
- A new voice model. GPT-Live-1.1 replaces the previous Live model in ChatGPT Voice.
- Native Hindi voices. Until now, speaking Hindi to ChatGPT meant hearing it back in a voice built for English. The new voices are built for the language.
- Better accents, fewer pauses. OpenAI promises "better accents" and less of the "checking…" filler while the model thinks.
- Custom voices. You can describe a voice, or give a recording, and create your own.
- Not in the API yet. OpenAI says GPT-Live-1.1 is "coming soon to the API" — developers cannot build with it today.
How to switch to a Hindi voice
- Update the ChatGPT app on Android or iPhone.
- Open Settings → Voice.
- Look for Leher or Neer in the voice list and pick one.
- Start a voice chat and speak in Hindi — or mix Hindi and English the way you normally talk.
If the voices are not there, the update has not reached your account yet. OpenAI's help article says the voices shown "may vary by region and account".
A note on the voice names
OpenAI's own pages do not agree. The ChatGPT Voice help article names the Hindi voices Leher and Neer. The developer changelog for the API lists a different Hindi voice, Nira. The help article describes the ChatGPT app, so that is the one this post follows — but the voice menu in your app is the final word.
What to use it for
- Spoken English practice with explanations in Hindi. Try our spoken-English coach prompt.
- Asking questions hands-free — while cooking, driving (as a passenger) or walking.
- Helping parents and grandparents who are more comfortable speaking Hindi than typing.
- Rehearsing an interview out loud, in the language the interview will be in.
What is still missing
- Other Indian languages. The announced list names Hindi only; Tamil, Telugu, Bengali, Marathi and the rest are not mentioned.
- Reliable rollout. Early users in OpenAI's forum report voices changing after the update and glitches on Android. These are user reports, not confirmed bugs.
- API access. Indian businesses wanting Hindi voice agents cannot use GPT-Live-1.1 yet. Microsoft's MAI-Voice-2.1, with six Hindi voices, is available to developers in preview.
