Meta's Muse Spark Open: An 816B Open-Weight Model — Can You Actually Run It?
Meta released the weights of Muse Spark on 15 October. It is huge, multimodal and built for coding agents. What "open" means here, the hardware it needs, and how Indian developers can use it without a GPU cluster.
What it is
- Size: ~816B total parameters, ~42B active per token (mixture-of-experts).
- Context: up to 1,048,576 tokens.
- Input: text, images, audio and video. Output: text.
- Focus: Meta positions it for coding and agentic work.
- Where: weights on Hugging Face in BF16 and NVFP4, plus community GGUF and MLX quantisations.
"Open" is not "open source"
The weights are free to download, but under Meta's Muse Model License, which Meta describes as having limited commercial terms. That is different from an open-source licence such as MIT or Apache 2.0. If you plan to put it in a commercial product, read the licence on the model card first. If a fully permissive licence matters to you, DeepSeek V4.1 Flash is MIT-licensed.
The hardware reality
| Setup (from Hugging Face's guide) | Hardware |
|---|---|
| NVFP4 weights in Transformers | One B200 node |
| BF16 weights in Transformers | Four nodes of 8× H200 |
| Hosted endpoint, 1M context | 8× H200 |
| llama.cpp, heavy 2-bit quantisation | Mac M3 Ultra with 512 GB memory (~18 tokens/s) |
No laptop or gaming PC will run this model. For most Indian developers the realistic options are a hosted API from a provider that serves it, or Hugging Face Inference Endpoints.
How good is it?
Meta calls it the most capable US open-weight model to date — a claim about American models, not all open models. Independent results are more modest: Vals.ai ranks it 38th of 49 models on its index. Treat it as a strong option for self-hosting and fine-tuning rather than a replacement for the top closed models.
Who should care
- Companies with data-residency rules that must keep data on their own servers.
- Teams fine-tuning on private data. Hugging Face shows a LoRA fine-tuning recipe; in its demo, token accuracy rose from 72% to 84%.
- Developers building agents that need to read screenshots, audio or video alongside text.
Everyone else can skip it for now. If you want a free model you can actually run on modest hardware, smaller Qwen 4 sizes are a better fit.

Frequently asked questions
Is Muse Spark Open free?
The weights are free to download from Hugging Face under Meta's Muse Model License, which has limited commercial terms. Running it needs very large GPUs, so most people use it through a paid hosted endpoint.
Can I run Muse Spark Open on my PC?
No. Even heavily compressed versions need a machine like a Mac M3 Ultra with 512 GB of memory, and the full-quality weights need data-centre GPUs such as B200 or H200 nodes.
Is Muse Spark Open open source?
It is open-weight, not open source in the strict sense: the weights are downloadable, but under Meta's own licence rather than a standard open-source licence.
