The US placed export controls on Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 — the most capable AI ever — forcing a global suspension. Today (July 1) the controls are lifted and Fable 5 is back. Here's what it can do.
Newest AI Models (July 2026): Claude Sonnet 5, GPT-5.6, GLM-5.2 & More
A fresh wave of AI models dropped in late June 2026 — Anthropic's Claude Sonnet 5, OpenAI's GPT-5.6 preview, and open-weight coders GLM-5.2 and LongCat-2.0. Here's what's new, with benchmarks and an India angle.

What's new (late June 2026): Anthropic shipped Claude Sonnet 5 (near-Opus quality at ~half the price), OpenAI previewed GPT-5.6 (Sol/Terra/Luna tiers), and Chinese labs dropped powerful open-weight coders GLM-5.2 and LongCat-2.0 that rival GPT-5.5 on coding for a fraction of the cost. Google also added fast image/video models (Nano Banana 2 Lite, Gemini Omni Flash).
The pace hasn't slowed. In the last two weeks of June 2026 the AI world got a fresh batch of models — a new default Claude, a preview of OpenAI's next frontier family, and a string of cheap, open-weight coding models from China that are genuinely competitive. Below is a quick, current rundown with benchmarks and what each means for Indian users. (You can put any of these head-to-head in our /models/compare tool.)
The big new releases
Claude Sonnet 5 (Anthropic, 30 Jun) — the most agentic Sonnet yet; now the default on free & Pro plans, with intro pricing of $2/$10 per 1M tokens. Closes most of the gap to Opus 4.8 at ~half the cost.
GPT-5.6 — Sol / Terra / Luna (OpenAI, 26 Jun) — a new three-tier frontier family in limited preview (not in ChatGPT yet). Terra matches GPT-5.5 quality at ~half the price; Luna pushes cost to the floor.
GLM-5.2 (Z.AI, 16 Jun) — a 744B open-weight (MIT) coder with a 1M context that beats GPT-5.5 on several long-horizon coding benchmarks for ~1/6th the cost.
LongCat-2.0 (Meituan, 30 Jun) — a 1.6T open MoE (~48B active, MIT) built for agentic coding, notable for being trained entirely on Chinese-made chips.
Seed 2.1 Pro (ByteDance, 24 Jun) — an enterprise agent flagship ByteDance claims beats Claude Opus on some coding/agent benchmarks at ~80% lower cost.
Kimi K2.7 Code (Moonshot AI, 12 Jun) — an open coding model tuned for long-horizon tasks, ~30% more token-efficient than K2.6.
Nano Banana 2 Lite & Gemini Omni Flash (Google, 30 Jun) — a ~4-second image model and a cheap ($0.10/sec) video generation + editing model.
Benchmark snapshot (new open-weight coders)
The most benchmark-transparent new releases are the open-weight models. These are the headline scores (some vendor-reported and not yet independently verified — treat as indicative):

Note on benchmarks: "SWE-bench Pro" and "Terminal-Bench" are harder, newer agentic-coding tests than the older SWE-bench Verified, so these scores aren't directly comparable to GPT-5.5's ~89 on Verified. Chinese-lab numbers are vendor-reported — wait for independent verification before betting production on them.
What this means for Indian users
Value keeps improving: Claude Sonnet 5's intro pricing and OpenAI's upcoming Terra/Luna tiers mean near-flagship quality for less — good for INR budgets.
Open-weight coding is booming: GLM-5.2, LongCat-2.0 and Kimi K2.7 give Indian devs frontier-class coding they can self-host (data stays in India) or call very cheaply.
China vs the West on cost: the new Chinese open models undercut US APIs dramatically — a hybrid setup (cheap open model for bulk, a flagship for the hardest tasks) is the smart play.
GPT-5.6 isn't usable yet: it's a limited preview, not in ChatGPT — for now GPT-5.5/5.4, Claude and Gemini remain the practical picks.
Try before you commit: don't take benchmark claims at face value — open /models/compare on AICreatorHub, add the new models next to GPT-5.5, Claude Opus and Gemini 3.1, and see the numbers and pricing side by side. Use the cost calculator to check the ₹ impact for your workload.
